Greensboro, NC -- A tropical cycle is given a name once it strengthens into a Tropical Storm when sustained winds become greater than 38 mph.  The given name will then stay with that storm as long as it maintains tropical characteristics and maintains wind speeds greater than 38 mph.

As much fun as it would be, the meteorologists at WFMY News 2 are not responsible for assigning the names to each tropical system. Meteorologist Grant Gilmore explains who is tasked with naming tropical systems and the convention used in the Atlantic Basin to recycle their names.

If you have a question about how hurricanes are named or about weather in general you can email the WFMY News 2 Weather Team at weather@wfmy.com.

Here is a link to the complete list of storm names for the next 6 years.
