Grigor Dimitrov was among Monday's opening-round winners at the 2014 season-
opening Brisbane International tennis event.
The rising Bulgarian Dimitrov whipped Dutchman Robin Haase 6-2, 6-3 at
Queensland Tennis Centre. Dimitrov lost to Andy Murray in last year's Brisbane
An upset came when American Sam Querrey dismissed seventh-seeded Russian
Dmitry Tursunov 7-5, 6-4 at this hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.
Also in the round of 32, Croat Marin Cilic overcame Uzbekistani Denis Istomin
6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen handled Aussie wild
card James Duckworth 6-2, 6-3, and Aussie Marinko Matosevic came back to beat
Frenchman Julien Benneteau 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). The 2008 Brisbane runner-up
Nieminen is rewarded with a second-round match against top seed Roger Federer,
while Cilic will face Dimitrov in his next outing.
The aforementioned Murray, the winner of the last two Brisbane championships,
is not defending his titles this week.
