Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of seeded women
suffered setbacks Wednesday at the Luxembourg Open tennis event.
German Annika Beck ousted fifth-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in
second-round action, while resurgent German Andrea Petkovic took down seventh-
seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in round one on the indoor
hardcourts at Kockelscheuer Sport Centre. Bouchard reached her first-ever WTA
final last week in Japan, losing to former U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur
Also in the second round in Luxembourg, eighth-seeded Serb Bojana Jovanovski
avoided an upset by handling Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh 6-1, 6-4 and Polish
qualifier Katarzyna Piter overcame Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Piter will face Beck in Friday's quarterfinals.
One other first-round match saw Czech qualifier Tereza Smitkova dismiss
France's Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 6-1.
This week's top-three seeds -- former world No. 1 and 2008 Luxembourg runner-
up Caroline Wozniacki, American Sloane Stephens and Wimbledon runner-up and
2009 Luxembourg finalist Sabine Lisicki -- will play second-round matches on
