Baku, Azerbaijan (Sports Network) - Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia began defense
of her Baku Cup title with a first-round victory on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Jovanovski claimed her maiden WTA title last year at this event
and on Tuesday earned a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Uzbekistan's Nigina Abduraimova.
She will be right back in action again Wednesday in the second round against
Tunisian wild card Ons Jabeur.
Last year's runner-up, American Julia Cohen, was a first-round loser Tuesday.
She fell to Polish qualifier Magda Linette, 6-2, 6-3.
Linette will next play the Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova, a 6-1, 6-2
winner over eighth-seeded Serbian Vesna Dolonc.
Other first-round winners Tuesday were Israel's Shahar Peer, Italy's Nastassja
Burnett, Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, Tetyana Arefyeva of the Ukraine and
Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic.
Peer rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ilona Kremen of Belarus, while
Burnett eased past Georgia's Anna Tatishvili, 6-2, 6-3, and Minella needed a
mere 43 minutes in a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Azerbaijan wild card Kamilla Farhad.
Arefyeva beat fellow Ukrainian qualifier Veronika Kapshay, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0,
6-0, and Martincova also won a matchup of qualifiers with a 6-3, 6-7 (1-7),
6-1 triumph over Georgian Oksana Kalashnikova.
The first round will conclude Wednesday with four matches, while second-round
play will also commence.
This week's champion will receive a first prize of $40,000.
