Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Sorana Cirstea of Romania and Italian
Francesca Schiavone were both first round winners during play at the Bank of
the West Classic on Monday.
Cirstea enters the tournament as the fifth seed, and she made quick work of
Japan's Ayumi Morita, taking a 6-2, 6-2 victory in 1 hour, 16 minutes.
Schiavone, a former 2010 French Open titlist, is moving on as well thanks to a
7-5, 6-3 victory against American Mallory Burdette. Her next opponent will be
top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.
American Madison Keys will advance to the second round, pulling off the upset
by knocking out eighth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova. She captured a 6-2, 6-2
victory in just over an hour's play.
Fellow American Nicole Gibbs also pulled out a victory in first round play,
edging Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in a 6-4, 6-1 final.
Lastly, Olga Govortsova of Belarus defeated German Julia Goerges in a 7-6
(7-2), 6-2 decision, while Stefanie Voegele cruised to victory in under an
hour, ousting Ajla Tomljanovic in 6-4, 6-0 fashion.
The winner of this tournament will receive $125,000.
