Baku, Azerbaijan (Sports Network) - Donna Vekic of Croatia and Romania's
Alexandra Cadantu were among the winners Monday on the first day of play at
the Baku Cup.
The second-seeded Vekic needed just 39 minutes to dispose of Azerbaijan wild
card Nazrin Jafarova in a 6-1, 6-0 rout. Vekic, who just turned 17 years old
last month, was a first-round loser at Wimbledon after a surprising run to the
final at the Birmingham tune-up.
Cadantu rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek.
The fourth seed was a semifinalist earlier this month in Budapest and also
reached the semis in Poland back in April.
Other winners on a light Monday schedule were Slovenia's Tadeja Majeric and
Tunisian wild card Ons Jabeur. Majeric knocked off fifth-seeded Karolina
Pliskova of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 6-4, while Jabeur thumped Russian Daria
Gavrilova, 6-4, 6-0.
Top-seeded Bojana Jovanovski is the defending champion and will play her
first-round match against Uzbekistan's Nigina Abduraimova. The Serbian beat
American Julia Cohen in last year's final.
