Bastad, Sweden (Sports Network) - Serena Williams defeated Klara Zakopalova
in the semifinals of the Swedish Open on Saturday for her 50th WTA main draw
match win of the year.
The top-seeded Williams beat Zakopalova, the No. 3 seed, by a 6-0, 6-4 margin
to improve to 27-0 on clay this year and 50-3 overall in 2013.
The American star is also coming off a stunning fourth-round loss at
Wimbledon. She has won six tournaments in 2013, including the French Open, and
is playing this event for the first time.
Next up for Williams is No. 8 seed Johanna Larsson of Sweden, who rallied past
Italian Flavia Pennetta 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Williams has 52 WTA titles, while Larsson is aiming for her first. Larsson was
the 2011 Bastad runner-up and was also a finalist in Portoroz three years
This year's Bastad titlist will claim $40,000.
