Bucharest, Romania (Sports Network) - Three-time champion Gilles Simon was a quarterfinal winner, while top seed Janko Tipsarevic came up a loser Friday at the $535,000 Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis event.

The world No. 10 Serbian star Tipsarevic succumbed to Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at BNR Arenas, while the second-seeded Simon continued his winning ways here with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over German Daniel Brands. The scrappy Frenchman Simon has now won his last 16 matches at this clay-court event.

Simon is the reigning Bucharest champion, having beaten Italian Fabio Fognini in last year's finale. The former top-10 star also titled back-to-back here in 2007 and 2008.

The one-time world No. 6 Simon's semifinal opponent on Saturday will be big- serving Czech Lukas Rosol, who upended eighth-seeded Serb Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-1 on Day 5.

The other semi will pit Garcia-Lopez against fifth-seeded former Bucharest titlist Florian Mayer, who got past heavy Romanian crowd favorite and 2007 runner-up Victor Hanescu 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Mayer captured the title here two years ago.

This week's champion will collect $96,000.
