a quarterfinal winner, while top seed Janko Tipsarevic came up a loser Friday
at the $535,000 Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis event.
The world No. 10 Serbian star Tipsarevic succumbed to Spaniard Guillermo
Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at BNR Arenas, while the second-seeded Simon
continued his winning ways here with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over German Daniel
Brands. The scrappy Frenchman Simon has now won his last 16 matches at this
Simon is the reigning Bucharest champion, having beaten Italian Fabio
Fognini in last year's finale. The former top-10 star also titled
back-to-back here in 2007 and 2008.
The one-time world No. 6 Simon's semifinal opponent on Saturday will be big-
serving Czech Lukas Rosol, who upended eighth-seeded Serb Viktor Troicki 6-3,
6-1 on Day 5.
The other semi will pit Garcia-Lopez against fifth-seeded former Bucharest
titlist Florian Mayer, who got past heavy Romanian crowd favorite and 2007
runner-up Victor Hanescu 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Mayer captured the title here two
