Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Fresh off her big title in Miami, reigning
champion Serena Williams was an easy second-round winner Tuesday at the Family
Circle Cup tennis event.
Following an opening-round bye, the world No. 1 Williams waltzed past Italian
Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-3 in 1 hour, 22 minutes on the green clay at Daniel
Island Tennis Center. Williams, who swatted nine aces on Day 2, was the
Charleston champ in 2008 and last year, when she beat Czech Lucie Safarova in
the final. She was also a runner-up here in 2003.
A mild second-round upset came when Swiss Stefanie Voegele doused seventh-
seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-4.
Former Charleston champion Jelena Jankovic posted a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 opening-
round win against struggling American Melanie Oudin. The ninth-seeded former
world No. 1 Jankovic captured this tournament back in 2007.
In other first-round action involving seeds, No. 10 Julia Goerges of Germany
grounded Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3; American qualifier Vania King
upended No. 14 Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; No. 15 Sabine
Lisicki of Germany dismantled helpless Georgian Anna Tatishvili 6-0, 6-0 in a
mere 41 minutes; and No. 16 Laura Robson of Great Britain blitzed Spaniard
Estrella Cabeza Candela 6-2, 6-2. Lisicki was the Family Circle champ in 2009.
Additionally in round one, New Zealand's Marina Erakovic topped Slovak Daniela
Hantuchova 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, Croat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni overcame Swiss Romina
Oprandi 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and American Madison Keys dismissed Romanian Alexandra
Cadantu 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
The winner of this $795,000 tournament will earn $125,000.
