Vina del Mar, Chile (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Jeremy Chardy survived a test from Chilean wild card Christian Garin in the second round of the ATP World Tour's VTR Open, but former world No. 5 Tommy Robredo was among Thursday's losers at the early-season clay-court event.

Chardy dropped the first set to the 16-year-old Garin before rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory at Club Naval de Campo Las Salinas. The Frenchman will next take on sixth-seeded Italian Paolo Lorenzi, who straight-setted Robredo in 6-4, 6-4 fashion, in Friday's quarterfinals.

The Spanish Robredo captured this event in Santiago two years ago.

Meanwhile, Argentine Horacio Zeballos upended fourth-seeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-3, 6-3, fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Ramos came from behind to dismiss Italian Filippo Volandri 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5, and seventh-seeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver drove out fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4. Ramos will battle Zeballos here on Friday, while Gimeno-Traver is rewarded with a quarterfinal against fellow countryman and former world No. 1 star Rafael Nadal.

The French Open champion Nadal returned to ATP World Tour action this week after being sidelined for seven months because of a knee injury.

Another quarterfinal on Friday will pit eighth-seeded Carlos Berlocq against Frenchman Guillaume Rufin. Berlocq was last year's Vina del Mar runner-up to fellow Argentine Juan Monaco.

This week's winner will collect $74,000.
