Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The United States piled more misery on Mexico on Tuesday with a 2-0 triumph over El Tri at Crew Stadium in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Eddie Johnson broke a scoreless deadlock in the 49th minute with a header before Landon Donovan doubled the advantage in the 78th from close range to put the Americans on the verge of clinching a place in the World Cup next summer.

Tim Howard made a pair of key saves in the first half to keep the match scoreless before Johnson headed home a Donovan corner early in the second half.

Mix Diskerud came off the bench to set up Donovan's goal 12 minutes from time to seal the win, while Clint Dempsey missed a penalty kick in the dying seconds which could have stretched the lead even further.

The result extends the Americans' unbeaten streak at home in World Cup qualifiers to 26 games, while Mexico has lost two straight in qualification and sits in fourth place.
