Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Lamar Neagle netted the only goal of the
contest on Wednesday as the Seattle Sounders claimed a 1-0 victory over
Chivas USA at CenturyLink Field.
The Sounders came into the match missing several top players as Obafemi Martins
was unavailable due to injury, Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson were on
international duty with the U.S. team and Leonardo Gonzalez also missed the
match due to suspension after receiving a red card last week.
Despite being without three of their top attacking options, it was the home
side that was on the front foot early, keeping possession almost exclusively in
the Chivas half of the field and generating several chances.
The pressure paid off in the 24th minute when Marc Burch whipped a free kick
into the area from the right side of the pitch. Neagle got free behind the
Goats' backline and fired it home with an acrobatic finish for his sixth goal
of the season.
Chivas failed to create many quality scoring chances, but almost came up with
an equalizer in the 79th minute when Edgar Mejia swung a well-struck free kick
into the Seattle penalty area and Mario de Luna got his head on it, but
directed the shot just wide of the left post.
The result keeps Seattle in fine form as the club has won six of its last seven
matches to pull even with second-place Los Angeles on 43 points. Chivas,
meanwhile, saw its modest two-game unbeaten run come to an end.
