Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - World Cup veteran Pablo Mastroeni signed a new contract Thursday to remain with the Colorado Rapids.

The 36-year-old Mastroeni, who played in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, missed most of last year after suffering a head injury in the season opener in March. The concussion ended his season after just two matches.

"I am thrilled to have signed a new contract and I can't wait to get back on the field in 2013," Mastroeni said.

Mastroeni joined the Rapids in 2002 from the now defunct Miami Fusion, and has been captain since late in the 2004 season. He has played in 218 games over 11 seasons with the club.

"Pablo is our captain, and a true leader on the field and in the locker room," Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo said. "We missed him last season."

Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
