SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith says he's eager to be part of the Panthers after an offseason filled with frustration over a 2-14 season.
Smith was among the Carolina players who reported for training camp Friday at Wofford College. The biggest absence was No. 1 draft pick Cam Newton, although Smith says he and the young quarterback texted each other Friday morning.
Smith says he's worked privately with Newton and likes the big-money moves to keep players like running back DeAngelo Williams, defensive end Charles Johnson and linebacker Jon Beason
Smith acknowledges he was immature in how he handled the Panthers' bad season. The 32-year-old receiver says he let his emotions take control too often and people rightfully criticized his poor attitude
