CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers may have found another receiver for Cam Newton to throw to next season. The Panthers opened the fifth round of the draft Saturday by taking Kealoha Pilares of Hawaii with the 132nd overall pick.
The 5-foot-10 Pilares will join a receiving unit that's in limbo as star Steve Smith has hedged on whether he wants to return to Carolina next season.
Pilares caught 88 passes for 1,306 yards and 15 touchdowns before hurting his knee in Hawaii's bowl game.
The Panthers took Newton with the first overall pick Thursday in hopes of jump-starting the NFL's worst offense. Pilares will join a group of young receivers that includes David Gettis, Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards.
