Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves activated Jason Heyward from the disabled list on Friday and the outfielder wore a protective mask on his batting helmet against the Cubs.

Heyward had surgery last month to repair a fractured jaw after he was hit in the side of the face by a pitch from Mets ace Jon Niese.

The protective piece on his helmet wrapped around to protect his jaw on the right side of his face, almost like a broadcaster who wears a microphone head piece. Heyward bats left-handed.

He had been on a tear since being moved to the leadoff spot for the Braves and was hitting .253 with 13 homers, 37 RBI and a .347 on-base percentage when he was injured.

Heyward worked a 10-pitch at-bat his first time to the plate Friday against Cubs starter Scott Baker but struck out.
