RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's basketball team opened up its 2013-14 exhibition season with a 96-85 win over UNC Pembroke on Wednesday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
Sophomore forward T.J. Warren notched a double-double on the night, leading all scorers with 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tyler Lewis dished out a game-high 15 assists, while redshirt junior transfer guard Ralston Turner added 20 points.
Junior guard Desmond Lee and true freshman Anthony 'Cat' Barber each had 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the Wolfpack. Four new players saw action for head coach Mark Gottfried, including true freshmen Kyle Washington, who started the game at small forward, BeeJay Anya and Barber.
"There were a lot of good things tonight," Gottfried said. "I like that we had 96 points and missed 17 foul shots and turned the ball over 16 times. If we don't turn the ball over as much as we did and make a few foul shots that 96 becomes about 110 pretty quick. I like that."
State led by as many as 10 points in the first half and 12 points in the second frame and never trailed over the course of the entire game. The Wolfpack held a decisive 36-16 advantage on fast break points versus UNC Pembroke while shooting 59.6 percent from the field (34-of-57).
After taking a 44-37 halftime lead, State held a working margin of between seven and nine points for the first eight minutes of the half until UNC Pembroke cut the score to 63-60 at the 11:46 mark. From there, Turner and Barber combined to rattle off seven straight points over a two minute span to up the advantage to 70-60.
UNC Pembroke trimmed the lead to 73-68 at the 7:00 minute juncture, but could get no closer the rest of the way. After a free throw by Lewis and a layup by Lennard Freeman, the Wolfpack maintained a lead of at least seven points the rest of the way, before closing out the game at the free throw line.
State started the game on an 8-0 run, punctuated by back-to-back alley oop dunks by Warren and Jordan Vandenburg to take the early advantage. The Wolfpack would sustain the lead, taking a 44-37 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Griffin Pittman led UNC Pembroke with 23 points on the night.
The Wolfpack will host Morehouse on Saturday, Nov. 2 at PNC Arena in its final exhibition game before the official start of the regular season against Appalachian State on Nov. 8.
