WINSTON-SALEM - The Winston-Salem State University football team began preparation for the 2013 season on Monday.
Head coach Connell Maynor and staff are expected to welcome close to 110 players to campus and preseason camp.
WSSU took the field as a full squad for the first time on Monday before holding its one and only two-a-day on Saturday, August 18th, with a practice at 9:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The 2013 edition of the Rams will be formally introduced to the public at Meet the Rams Day, Saturday, August 17th, from 2:00 to 4:30pm at the Blair Hall Plaza on the WSSU campus.
The 2013 season opens on September 5th as the Winston-Salem State Rams will travel to Division II Independent UNC Pembroke for a Thursday night, 8:00 p.m. kickoff at . Winston-Salem State, which finished as national runner-up in 2012, held off UNC Pembroke 28-23, with a defensive stand in the final minute of play last season.
The Rams return 9 starters and 53 lettermen off of last season's team, including preseason All-Americans and 2012 Defensive Player of the Year, Carlos Fields Jr (6-2, 235, Sr, Henderson, NC) and offensive lineman Nathaniel Hartung (6-2, 380, Sr, Butler, PA).
The Winston-Salem State University Rams were chosen to three-peat as Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champions during the CIAA Football Media Day, as the Rams are coming off the most successful season in HBCU history, finishing 14-1 and earning their second consecutive HBCU National Championship.
The Winston-Salem State University Rams have been selected sixth Lindy's Football Annual Division II preseason poll and 11th by The Sporting News leading up to the 2013 season.
