GREENSBORO, N.C. -UNCG men's basketball program is back on the court and working hard in preparation for its trip to Spain a week from Thursday. The Spartans will travel to the Iberian Peninsula Aug. 8-17 with stops in Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona as the NCAA allows a program one foreign trip in a four-year period.
"This trip is going to be a once in a lifetime experience for our program and our players," head coach Wes Miller said. "It comes at a great time for our program with seven newcomers and two guys who redshirted last year. They will have the chance to not only play five games with the returning players, but having 10 additional practice days this summer will help us be further along come October."
The Spartans are slated to play five games in Spain and are granted 10 additional practice days leading up to the trip. UNCG is scheduled to three games against national team programs from around the world, including possible games against Venezuela and Ivory Coast, which are preparing for the FIBA America Championship and FIBA Africa Championship, respectively, later in August. The national programs are battling for spots in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup which is also held in Spain.
The Spartans' three games against national team programs are scheduled in Madrid (Aug. 10 & 11) and Zaragoza (Aug. 13). Additionally, UNCG is slated to play two games against club teams from Spain with those games taking place in Barcelona Aug. 15 and 16.
Junior Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School) will provide fans a way to follow the Spartans on their 10-day trip as he will be keeping a blog on www.uncgspartans.com throughout the trip. Paulos will be giving a student-athlete's perspective to the trip, both on and off the court as UNCG experiences the Spanish culture.
All 15 student-athletes on the roster are slated to make the trip. Among the returning letterwinners leading the Spartans to Spain will be Paulos, sophomore Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonough), senior guard Drew Parker (Houston, Texas/La Porte) and sophomore Jordan Potts (Columbus, Ohio/Northland).
Additionally, redshirt freshman center RJ White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) returns after suffering a season-ending injury after just seven games last year.
Redshirt junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) will be eligible to make his first appearance in a Spartan uniform during the foreign tour. Cain had to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules after earning two letters at Arizona State.
This marks the first time UNCG men's basketball has made a foreign tour since prior to the 2007-08 season when the Spartans traveled to Italy for three games.
