Greensboro, NC-- The UNCG men's basketball program has finalized the contract to play the University of North Carolina the next three seasons that will involve two games played in Chapel Hill and one game played at the Greensboro Coliseum. The series will mark the first ever meetings between the two schools that are separated by just 54 miles.
"I am excited about the opportunity to compete against North Carolina over the next few years," head coach Wes Miller said. "I know that our players and the entire UNCG community will be looking forward to the games. Having North Carolina return to play us at home in 2014-15 will be a tremendous moment for everyone at UNCG and the city of Greensboro. I am grateful that Coach Williams has agreed to play."
The series will commence in the 2013-14 season when the Spartans make their first-ever visit to Chapel Hill playing in the Dean Smith Center Dec. 7. It will mark the return of Miller to the arena he played in from 2004-07, winning a National Championship with the Tar Heels in 2005 and leading team to 31-wins as team captain his senior season.
"If we can help one of our former players who is coaching another team, that is also great for our program," North Carolina head coach Roy Williams said. "Wes (Miller) is a great young coach who did a fabulous job as a player at North Carolina and is an important part of our UNC family. We look forward to competing against his teams."
The Tar Heels will make the trip to the Greensboro Coliseum during the 2014-15 season, marking the Spartans' 13th home game against an Atlantic Coast Conference foe in program history. The three-game series will wrap up in the 2015-16 season when UNCG returns to Chapel Hill.
"We are extremely excited to announce this series with North Carolina," director of athletics Kim Record said. "This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes, fans and alumni to enjoy the first-ever meetings between UNCG and UNC on the basketball court. Hosting North Carolina is another premier event we have the privilege of holding in our home, the Greensboro Coliseum."
The Greensboro Coliseum is one of the finest facilities in the Southeast and has been the full-time home of the Spartans since the 2009-10 season. The Greensboro Coliseum has hosted 23 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournaments and 12 NCAA men's tournament competitions in facility history.
UNCG will have a limited number of tickets available for next season's visit to Chapel Hill.
