High Point/Thomasville, NC - The HiToms Baseball Club announced today the hiring of current Furman assistant coach and former HiTom Zach Brown as the franchise's 2013 head coach.

A 2005 and '06 Coastal Plain League All-Star and a member of the CPL's All-Decade team, Brown led the HiToms to two consecutive playoff appearances in 2005 & 2006, the 2005 Western Division title and the franchise's first CPL Petit Cup in 2006.

Recording nine doubles and 58 hits (4th league-wide) in his first year with the Tommies, Brown returned in 2006 and vaulted to the top of the CPL's offensive charts. Finishing first in total bases (113), second in RBI (44), second in home runs (12), second in doubles (12) and third in slugging percentage (.557), Brown's 2006 summer energized a HiToms squad that won 11 of their last 15 games.

"I am excited and thrilled with the opportunity to manage the HiToms," Zack Brown said. "My two summers in High Point/Thomasville were an extremely enjoyable and rewarding experience, and I relay that daily to my current players. I have a tremendous amount of pride in the HiToms and I am ready to return in a new role and experience the challenge of competing for a CPL championship."

A standout performer at the Citadel, Brown paced the Bulldogs to a Southern Conference championship in 2004 and as an assistant coach in 2010. Garnering first-team All-SoCon honors in 2007 and recording over 200 career hits and winning three games as a pitcher, the Greenville, SC native was drafted in the 27th round by the San Diego Padres spending three years in the minors.

Serving as an assistant coach for two seasons at the Citadel (2010 & 2011), one season as the head coach of the 16U Upstate Mavericks, and one spring as an associate scout with the Boston Red Sox, Brown is now an assistant at Furman University.

"From his first day as a HiTom, Zach Brown was a leader," HiToms President Greg Suire said. "Inspiring his teammates to perform every day while simultaneously raising his game to historic status, Brown willed our organization to another level. Commanding respect from teammates and opponents alike, Zack has nurtured his coaching career from the day he stepped foot on Finch Field. I have full confidence that Brown will elevate our franchise once again."

"We are recruiting players who are very talented and are in-tune with a natural desire to compete," Brown said. "I want young men who don't like to lose at anything: ping-pong, basketball or whatever challenge that arises. I will have players who are driven once the lights are turned on."

Brown becomes the HiToms 13th head coach in modern-day history and the third former HiTom player (Matt McCay - 2008, Sean Walsh - 2012) to skipper the Tommies.

The HiToms also announced Brown's coaching staff today. Erskine College assistant coach and former HiTom Shelton Cisson (2005 CPL All-Star, Erskine College) will join current Winthrop University assistant and former HiTom Wilson Boyd (2006 CPL All-Star, Clemson) as Brown's top two coaches. Both Cisson and Boyd were teammates of Brown during his HiToms career.
