Fort Wayne, IN (Sports Network) - Lakareber Abe and Gabriella Then both won two matches on Friday to advance to the final match at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.
Abe ousted Kathleen Scavo, 4 & 3, in the quarters. In the semifinals, Abe fought off Bethany Wu, 1-up.
Then fended off Yueer Feng, 1-up, in the quarters before holding off Megan Khang, 2 & 1, in the semifinals at Sycamore Hills Golf Club.
Abe and Wu traded wins on every hole from the second to the 10th. Abe took the par-3 11th with a par. Abe birdied the 12th for her second win in a row, and her first 1-up lead of the match.
Wu parred the 13th and that was enough to square the match. At the 16th, Abe rolled in her fourth birdie effort of the day to again go 1-up. The pair halved the final two holes with pars as Abe advanced to the final for the first time in her seventh USGA Championship.
In the other semifinal match, the pair halved the first two holes. Then birdied the next two holes to go 2-up, and she won the fifth with a par. Khang won three of four holes from the sixth, all with pars, to square the match.
Around the turn, Khang bogeyed the 10th and 11th to again fall 2-down. The duo halved six consecutive holes to give Then the victory.
