Lorton, VA (Sports Network) - Jordan Niebrugge defeated Michael Kim, 1-up, on Saturday in the 36-hole final to win the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

Kim, the second-ranked amateur in the world, had the perceived advantage entering the championship match at Laurel Hill Golf Club.

The 20-year-old California native has been on an impressive run of late. He finished as the low amateur at the U.S. Open in June, won the 2013 Jack Nicklaus Award and the Fred Haskins Award for national collegiate player of the year, and was recently named to the 2013 U.S. Walker Cup team.

But Niebrugge, 19, proved the better golfer on Saturday.

The Mequon, Wis., native was 1-up through 18 holes courtesy of a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-4 17th.

After a break, Niebrugge birdied the par-4 second for the sixth time in seven matches to go 2-up. He pushed that advantage to three with a 17-foot birdie at the fourth, then moved 4-up when Kim 3-putted for bogey at the sixth.

But Kim refused to go quietly.

He reached the par-5 ninth in two and made birdie to move three back, then drained a 28-footer for another birdie at the 12th to get within two with six holes remaining.

At the next, Niebrugge stumbled to a 3-putt bogey and Kim parred to move a shot back.

He would get no closer, however, as Niebrugge matched him the rest of the way to secure the narrow victory.
