Albuquerque, NM (SportsNetwork.com) - Joey DeMartino amassed 144 yards and
three touchdowns on only 12 carries to propel the Utah State Aggies to a 45-10
rout of the New Mexico Lobos on a Mountain West Conference tilt at University
DeMartino also tallied 41 yards and a touchdown on three catches for Utah
State (4-4, 3-1 MWC). Darell Garretson also played well as he completed 15-
of-23 pass attempts for 144 yards and a touchdown in his first career start.
Jaron Bentrude rushed 72 yards for a touchdown on his only carry while Robert
Marshall tallied 61 yards on 14 rushes. Travis Reynolds set game-highs with
four catches and 42 receiving yards.
Clayton Mitchem, Cole Gautsche and David Vega combined to go 11-of-20 for 140
yards for New Mexico (2-5, 0-3) as it suffered its second consecutive loss and
fourth setback in five games. Kasey Carrier contributed 69 yards and a
touchdown on 14 carries and Jeric Magnant led the Lobos in receiving with 40
yards on two catches.
New Mexico got off to a poor start and never recovered. The Lobos fumbled the
ball deep in their own territory on the third play from scrimmage as Mitchem
lost control and the Aggies' Connor Williams made a heads up play with a
recovery. DeMartino put USU on the scoreboard as he rushed eight yards for a
touchdown on the next play.
Garretson made it 14-0 as he completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to DeMartino
at the 8:05 mark of the first quarter to conclude a 10-play, 68-yard drive.
Nick Diaz sent the Aggies into the second stanza with a 17-0 lead by chipping
in a 24-yard field goal try in the closing seconds of the opening period.
New Mexico finally ended the run as Justus Adams converted a 24-yard field
goal attempt with just under eight minutes left before halftime. The Aggies
quickly responded as DeMartino rushed 42 yards into Lobos territory to set up
himself for a 32-yard touchdown run on the following play.
The Lobos lost three yards on their next possession before Bruce Natson
returned a punt 65 yards for a score that extended the visitors' lead to 31-3
as the contest progressed into halftime.
DeMartino provided the only score of the third quarter with a 48-yard
touchdown run just over one minute after the opening kickoff of the second
Bentrude broke away for his long touchdown run with eight minutes left in
regulation. Carrier scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 6:21 showing on
the clock in the fourth quarter to finalize the score with New Mexico behind,
The Aggies held a 492-298 edge in total yards of offense and racked up 337
rushing yards while averaging eight yards per carry. New Mexico went 3-of-15
on third-down conversions. USU has now won 10 straight conference road games
dating back to the 2011 season, extending its own school record.
