Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Ka'Deem Carey racked up 236 yards rushing as
the Arizona Wildcats held on for a 35-24 decision over the Utah Utes in a
Pac-12 Conference battle at Arizona Stadium.
Carey tallied a season-high 40 carries for Arizona (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) as it
snapped a two-game losing slide. B.J. Denker completed 18-of-30 pass attempts
for 168 yards and a score and also added 50 yards and two touchdowns on the
ground. Nate Phillips made four catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Adam Schulz paced Utah (4-3, 1-3) as he hit on 12-of-23 pass attempts for 142
yards and a touchdown. Schulz entered the game after Travis Wilson, who went
3-of-9 for 15 yards with one touchdown against two interceptions, left the
game due to a thumb injury. Lucky Radley gained a team-high 56 yards on five
carries while Kelvin York finished with 47 yards and a touchdown on 12
carries. Sean Fitzgerald picked up a game-high 69 yards and a touchdown on
three receptions for the Utes, who were coming off of a 27-21 upset of
Arizona struck first as Denker scored on a 10-yard run at the 9:17 mark of the
first quarter to conclude an eight-play, 80-yard drive. The Utes answered on
their next drive as they moved the ball 69 yards down the field on seven plays
before Wilson completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Denham to tie the
score at seven.
Neither side managed to produce any more points in the opening quarter. The
Wildcats' defense made a key play as Marquis Flowers picked off Wilson and
returned the interception 14 yards for a touchdown. Denker punched it in from
a yard out with 5:48 left before halftime for the final score of the first
half. Jake Smith had his extra point attempt blocked, which left the Wildcats
with a 20-7 lead at the break.
After Arizona was stopped on fourth down at Utah's 45-yard line, Schulz
completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Sean Fitzgerald to tie the score at 20.
Andy Phillips sent his extra-point attempt through the uprights to give the
Utes their first lead at 21-20.
The Wildcats answered in the fourth frame as Denker found Phillips for a
seven-yard scoring strike. Denker rushed across the goal line on the ensuing
two-point conversion attempt to put the hosts back ahead, 28-21, with 13:32
left in regulation.
Utah narrowed the deficit with 7:11 showing on the clock as Phillips connected
on a 44-yard field goal attempt to make it a four-point margin.
The Utes' defense kept the momentum going as LT Tuipolutu forced Carey to
fumble and Trevor Reilly recovered the loose ball at Arizona's 39-yard line.
Utah's offense could not take advantage of the short field and Phillips missed
a 40-yard field goal attempt.
Carey made up for his miscue on the ensuing drive as he broke away for a 44-
yard touchdown run. Jake Smith chipped in the extra-point attempt to give
Arizona a lasting, 35-24 lead with only 1:30 left to play.
Arizona held a 468-329 edge in total yards of offense and also a 26-16
advantage in first downs. The Wildcats also moved the chains on 12-of-20 third
down plays while Utah went 5-of-18 on third-down conversions.
