Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind a career-high 38 points from Richard Carter, the Drake Bulldogs held off the Illinois-Chicago Flames, 61-59, in the season opener at UIC Pavilion.

Carter shot 12-of-17 from the field and was perfect on 12 free-throw attempts for Drake (1-0). Carter's 38 points were most by a Bulldogs' player since Lynnrick Rogers put up 38 against Wichita State in 1997. Gary Ricks was the only other play in double figures with 10 points.

For UIC (0-1), Marc Brown tallied 20 points, Kelsey Whitaker had 11 points and seven assists and Hayden Humes poured in 10 points.

UIC controlled the first half, shooting 44 percent from the field before going into the halftime locker room with a 30-25 lead.

Drake climbed back in the game after the break, and down by one with under 11 minutes to play, it ripped off a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead. The Flames wouldn't go away quietly, as they brought their deficit to one point on a Brown layup with 1:16 left, but those would be their final points of the game. Humes missed a shot in the waning seconds as Drake held on to win.

The Bulldogs were able to overcome 18 turnovers by having an outstanding night from the foul line (20-of-23). UIC was just 10-of-17 from the stripe.
