Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Led by a 16-point performance from Jordan
Coleman, the Valparaiso Crusaders defeated the Murray State Racers, 77-74, in
season-opening action at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Jordan was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line and grabbed eight
rebounds for the Crusaders (1-0). Vashil Fernandez added 14 points and seven
rebounds off the bench while Alec Peters managed 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Racers (0-1) were led by Cameron Payne who scored 21 points and dished out
a game-high four assists while knocking down four 3-pointers despite shooting
just 6-of-24 from the field. Dexter Fields and Tyler Rambo added 12 points
each while Jarvis Williams contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.
Valpo took a 38-31 lead into the break after holding the Racers to just 29
percent shooting from the floor in the first half.
Murray State was able to cut into their deficit in the second half but never
managed to take the lead over even tie the game. A pair of layups and some
free-throws proved enough in the final minutes for the Crusaders to secure the
win. The Racers had possession of the ball with one second left, but did not
get to attempt a 3-point shot to tie as Jeffery Moss's inbound pass resulted
in a turnover.
Valpo's bench contributed 27 points compared to 17 from the Racers' reserves,
proving to be the deciding factor.
The two physical squads combined for 53 personal fouls and 77 attempts from
the free-throw line.
