Providence, RI (Sports Network) - Providence guard Ricky Ledo never played for the school because of academic issues, and apparently never will suit up for the Friars.

The freshman has declared for the NBA Draft and will forego his four years of collegiate eligibility. He did not play this season after the NCAA ruled him academically ineligible.

"I want to thank Providence College for the opportunity to be a Friar," said Ledo in a statement Tuesday. "As much as I wanted to play for the Friars and help the team win a Big East championship, I felt I could not pass up this opportunity to enter the NBA Draft now. I had a great experience this season and ... I appreciate all the support from the college, the fans, my teammates and the coaching staff, especially coach (Ed) Cooley. I love my teammates and I will always be a Friar."

Ledo, a Providence native, did practice and worked out with the squad during the season.

"We want to wish Ricky all the best and thank him for his efforts this season," said Cooley. "Ricky is one of the most talented players that I have had the opportunity to coach. I am sure he will enjoy a very productive professional career."
