Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Maurice Kemp led the way with 20 points and
12 rebounds as the East Carolina Pirates coasted to an 81-58 victory over the
Evansville Purple Aces in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament
at Minges Coliseum.
Miguel Paul and Robert Sampson posted double-doubles of their own for the
Pirates (22-12), who will go on to play the winner of the Weber State and
Northern Iowa matchup in the championship round. Paul tallied 19 points and 11
assists while Sampson scored 11 points and collected 13 rebounds. Ty Armstrong
also had a strong showing as he went 6-of-7 from the floor en route to 17
Colt Ryan paced Evansville (21-15) with 12 points. Egidijus Mockevicius
registered nine points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in the setback.
ECU wasted no time taking control as it hit on 50 percent of its field goal
tries in the opening half and limited the Purple Aces to 25.6 percent
efficiency. The Pirates also scored eight points off turnovers in the first
period to help build a 40-26 lead by the intermission.
Armstrong scored 13 of his points after the break while Kemp produced 12
second-half points. ECU drained 60.7 percent of its field goal attempts and
held Evansville without a make from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes
of action to extend its lead and advance.
The Aces finished 1-of-15 from 3-point range. ECU assisted 20 of its 31 makes
from the floor and outscored the visitors, 48-36, in the paint.
