West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Kevin Foster erupted for 34 points as
the Santa Clara Broncos held off the Purdue Boilermakers, 86-83, in the
quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational at Mackey Arena.
Foster, who shot 11-of-24 from the floor, also handed out eight assists for
the Broncos (22-11) who now advance to the semifinals of the tournament to
face an opponent to be determined. Also scoring in double figures for the
visitors were Raymond Cowels III and Marc Trasolini with 13 and 10 points,
respectively, while Niyi Harrison cleared a game-high 11 rebounds off the
The Boilermakers (16-17) were paced by Ronnie Johnson with 27 points, while
Terone Johnson responded with 22 points, but shot just 8-of-22 from the floor
on the night.
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor in the first half, with Purdue
also missing on all five chances behind the 3-point line in the frame.
However, the Boilermakers did convert 11-of-14 at the free-throw line in order
to claim a 37-33 advantage at the break.
In the second half SCU broke through with 63.0 percent accuracy from the
field, including 7-of-13 beyond the arc, in order to squeeze out the three-
point road win.
The Broncos turned the ball over 19 times, but made up for it by outscoring
the hosts on the perimeter, 27-3.
