CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WCNC) -- For the veterans at VFW Post 9488 on The Plaza, Monday was a special day, all because of new flags.
Earlier this month, someone stole the American, and POW and MIA flags.
"Last week, overnight, someone damaged some of the boxes on the artillery display pieces and tore down the flags. That's all we knew. They were there when we went home. They weren't when we got back," said Lewis Hunt, Commander , VFW Post 9488.
The flags were gone, and so was that feeling of trust in fellow citizens, the very ones the veterans fought to protect.
"Obviously, it showed us a massive level of disrespect when somebody stole our flags," said Hunt.
Then, came hope that there are still good people out there.
"Y'all did a news story. They contacted back to y'all to replace our flags that were stolen last weekend," he added.
They refers to the Conder Flag Company.
"We saw the news report early one morning about the flags had been taken, and we felt like it was important that we honor the veterans and replace those flags for them," said Tim Gilland, Conder Flag Company.
Replacing the flags and perhaps more.
"It was a little bit a sense of pride when somebody, a company, that we're not affiliated with just decided to step up and help when they saw a problem," said Hunt.
No one has been arrested for stealing the flags or causing damage to the display.
