Two Winston-Salem Police Officers Struck, Suspect Arrested

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem Police Department says two police officers were struck during a traffic stop Wednesday that led to a vehicle pursuit.

Police say they pulled the driver of a vehicle over on Patterson Avenue. During the stop officers discovered illegal narcotics and tried to arrest, Tyrone Kirby who they say struggled with officers and resisted arrest. Investigators say Kirby made it back to his car and intentionally struck both officers as he sped away starting a vehicle pursuit.   

However, Kirby's vehicle ended up crashing into another car after entering an intersection. Three people were transported to Baptist Hospital with minor injuries. Police arrested Kirby after the crash. They also searched his vehicle and found a large quantity of illegal drugs and money.

Kirby is being treated at Forsyth Hospital for minor injuries from the crash.

The Winston-Salem Police Department says both of the officers were not seriously injured and did not receive medical treatment.

Officials charged Kirby with Assault with Firearm/Deadly Weapon on Government Official, two counts of Trafficking in Cocaine, Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance, Resist/Delay/Obstruct Public Officer Discharge Duties, Operate Motor Vehicle while Fleeing/Attempt to Elude Law Enforcement.

He is jailed under a $165,000 bond.
