MADISON, N.C. -- The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office arrested the man who they say hit an off-duty Winston-Salem police officer.
The incident happened early Sunday morning.
The officer was driving home from work in his personal vehicle - still wearing his uniform - when a black Camaro drove up behind him and started flashing his lights.
The officer pulled over. So did the Camaro. After a moment, the Camaro left.
As the officer continued his drive home, the Camaro returned: again flashing its lights.
The officer pulled over once more. The sheriff's office says when he approached the Camaro, which pulled up behind him, the driver cursed at him and hit him in the left leg as he drove away.
The officer was not seriously hurt. He gave the Camaro's license plate number to the sheriff's office.
Deputies arrested Billy Ray Branch III. Officials charged him with Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggressive Driving and Driving While License Revoked.
Branch was jailed under a $2,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 11.
