GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A South Carolina man appeared in court Monday on charges he killed a 7-year-old Greensboro girl more than two decades ago.
A Guilford County trial court administrator said 52-year-old Donald Preston Ferguson of Spartanburg, S.C., was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sex offense in connection with the death of Shalonda Poole in 1990.
The administrator said Ferguson could face the death penalty.
Ferguson remains in the Guilford County Jail with no bond.
Shalonda's body was found behind an elementary school. Police say she had been assaulted and strangled. Police say Ferguson left the Greensboro area the month after the girl disappeared from her home.
Ferguson was convicted in a sexual assault case in Spartanburg and was released from a South Carolina prison in 1997. He was on probation at the time of his arrest this week.
