GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Five animals have been shot and killed in one Guilford County neighborhood in the past two days.

Four goats were found shot to death on property near Lebanon Baptist Church on Thursday. The goats belonged to the church.

A dog was shot and killed in a backyard Wednesday morning, just one mile from the church.

"It was unbelievable and I'm still surprised a person would do something like that that," said James Grant.

On New Year's day, James Grant and his family were inside their home on Jason Road when they heard a loud gunshot.

"None of us didn't know it was a dog until my dad said somebody just shot a dog, somebody just shot a dog right in our yard," explained Grant.

The dog was lying about 20 feet from their back door but the shooter was no where in sight.

"That's one thing we still try to figure out - why in our backyard?"

It's a question the Guilford County Sheriff's office can't answer yet.

"We don't know if its juveniles just got a gun going out and shooting, we don't know who it is at this particular point but we are investigating," explained Colonel Randy Powers, Guilford County Sheriff's Office.

Colonel  Powers says he can't remember the last crime like this but hopes history doesn't repeat itself for a third day.

"It's hard to say that it will happen again but it has happened two days in a row," said  Colonel Powers.

"That's unbelievable - not just a dog but goats as well getting shot? That's not good. That's not good at all," said Grant.

Grant nor the Sheriff's Office knows who the dog belonged to.

Colonel Powers says residents in this area need to be alert of what's going on and asks if anyone has any information to call the Sheriff's Office at 336-641-3694 or CrimeStoppers at 336-373-1000.
