ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- High-elevation areas to the north and west of Asheville could get heavy snow Thursday evening and early Friday.

Asheville and other valley locations may see some snow showers during the same period, but little or no accumulation is expected, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Tennessee border counties - Graham, Swain, Haywood, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell and Avery - from 4 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday.

Areas above 3,500 feet in those counties could receive 3-5 inches of snow by Friday morning, according to the Weather Service. Expect windy conditions Thursday and Friday, with winds gusting up to 50 mph at high elevations.

A second round of winter weather is possible Sunday and Monday, with rain, freezing rain and snow in the forecast.

In Asheville, look for a high of 50 today under sunny skies. After a low tonight of 32, expect cloudy skies and a high of 49 Thursday, with an 80 percent chance of rain. Rain mixing with snow is possible Thursday night, changing to all snow after midnight.

Friday should be sunny and blustery with a high of only 27. Saturday's high should be 40 with sunny skies.

On Sunday, look for a high of 47 with a 50 percent chance of rain or freezing rain, according to the Weather Service. Sunday night's low should be 27 with a 50 percent chance of rain and snow showers.
