RALEIGH, N.C. -- Officials with North Carolina's state parks are encouraging people to hike their way into 2014.
For the third year, the state Division of Parks and Recreation is offering First Day Hikes on Wednesday at every state park and recreation area. More than 40 hikes are scheduled, ranging from short walks called "leg-stretchers" to four-mile hikes. Interpretative programs are offered with some hikes.
A favorite hike is one along the ocean at Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro while hikers will visit the world's oldest known longleaf pine at Weymouth Woods Historic Nature Preserve in Southern Pines.
