Retailers to roll out huge after-Christmas deals

Retailers - from Wal-Mart to Macy's to Target - are giving one last Santa-approved surge of after-Christmas deals. For an early start, some online sales, including at Target.com and Kohls.com, started yesterday. And for sales die-hards, many Wal-Mart and Kohl's stores will open on Thursday by 5 a.m

Thousands remain without power in Maine and Michigan

More than 150,000 people who lost power in a storm Saturday continue to wait for repair crews to restore their service. Freezing temperatures have not helped matters, as the ice won't melt from the power lines, causing new outages even as others are fixed. Officials in Maine said many residents should not expect to get their power back until Friday. That estimate could change, however, as more snow is expected in Maine and Michigan, Thursday.

UPS driver: 2013 'worst Christmas ever' for delivery

Social media exploded on Christmas with complaints about UPS and FedEx from customers furious about empty spots under their trees. Most complaints were directed at UPS, which issued statements on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day acknowledging that the company was overwhelmed by unexpected volume and some packages were delayed until after the holiday. Thousands of UPS packages will arrive after Christmas. As for UPS workers, "We are doing the best we can," Ledet says of his UPS colleagues. "I am sure I'll be working until 10 p.m. tomorrow."

Justin Bieber: 'I'm officially retiring'

On Christmas Eve, and on the eve of the premiere of his documentary, Believe, Justin Bieber tweeted, "My beloved beliebers I'm officially retiring." Is he for real? Well, the tweet did follow another public comment about retirement. Last week, he told Los Angeles radio station Power 106, "After the new album, I'm actually, I'm retiring man, I'm retiring." We're thinking maybe the 19-year-old doesn't define "retiring" the same way we do. (As in, he doesn't think it means "to stop working.") Proof: In an e-mail to USA TODAY from the Philippines, the final stop of his 15-month Believe tour, Bieber wrote, "I'm going to take my time (next year) to really find my sound as an adult. That takes time and patience, and I'm grateful I have the ability to step back and focus on my creativity."

Michigan State suspends senior linebacker for Rose Bowl

Two-time team captain Max Bullough has been suspended for the Rose Bowl against Stanford for violating team rules, Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio announced Wednesday. The Spartans senior linebacker was named to the All-America third team and All-Big Ten first team, and he had 76 tackles, 9.5 for loss, this season. In 2011, Bullough, then 19, was arrested after a disturbance at a bar in Aspen, Colo.
