GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro City Councilman Zack Matheny says he is running for U.S. Congressman Howard Coble's seat.

Matheny made a formal announcement at 11 a.m. Monday at Koury Aviation.

He praised Coble and said he will have big shoes to fill. Matheny told attendees he thought Obamacare is too much, too fast and criticized the government shutdown.

Coble announced in the beginning of November that he does not plan to run for re-election in 2014. He said health reasons influenced his decision not to seek a 16th term.

Coble represents the Sixth Congressional District in North Carolina, a position he's held since 1985. That district is comprised of five counties, including: Caswell, Person, Rockingham, Stokes and Surry. There are parts of five additional counties also included in the district: Alamance, Durham, Granville, Guilford and Orange.

Matheny represents Greensboro's District 3. Greensboro voters re-elected him in November

According to the city of Greensboro, District 3 covers "just north of W. Lee Street along N. Church Street at the eastern boundary to an area just north of Lake Townsend, including some satellite annexation areas."

In addition to Matheny, five candidates announced they are running for Coble's seat.
