WINSTON-SALEM & ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. -- Halifax Regional Medical Center and Novant Health announced Friday they intend to merge, in what they say is an effort to "make healthcare more affordable and improve patient outcomes in the community."

The agencies said the planned merger will come after a one-year management agreement period in which "due diligence" would be completed. They said Friday's merger announcement comes after a formal process led by the Halifax Regional Board to select a strategic partner.

Halifax Regional board chairman Bob Patterson said earlier this year, Halifax Regional "set out on a journey to find a partner who is a leader in healthcare, while we position to move into the future during this dynamic time."

Mark Billings, president of Novant Health Shared Services, said, "The Halifax Regional board has pursued a strategic partner in a thoughtful and deliberate way. We look forward to collaborating with the Halifax Regional leadership team to bring improved access to affordable quality healthcare to the residents in and around Halifax and Northampton Counties.

The companies said the management agreement is expected to begin in March 2014. The companies did not say whether the potential merger would affect existing jobs or create new positions.

Novant Health is based in Winston-Salem and has 1,100 physicians and 24,000 other employees. Halifax Regional Medical Center is based in Roanoke Rapids and has 60 physicians and 600 other employees
