Greensboro, NC-- WFMY News 2 discovered there's no chance a Trader Joe's is coming to Greensboro after the developer failed to reach a deal.

Greensboro City Council still gets e-mails in support of rezoning the Friendly Shopping Center area to make room for a Trader Joe's on the corner of Friendly and Hobbs Avenues.

What people don't know, it's not up to city council and never was. That's because the developer couldn't reach a deal to even put the idea on the table.

WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford spoke to Henry Isaacson, the former attorney for the developer, Regency Centers.

Isaacson said a deal wasn't reached for a number of reasons.

Neighbors in the area continued to voice concerns about traffic and congestion in the area. There also would have been rezoning issues if a deal was proposed.

Isaacson told WFMY News 2 that the neighbors wanted many expensive improvements like extending buffering walls and building an extra turn lane. Eventually, Regency Centers pulled out after spending a lot of time and money trying to find a resolution to build.

You might be thinking: "Why not build a Trader Joe's somewhere else in Greensboro?"

According to Isaacson and Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins, Trader Joe's only wanted to build in the area around the Friendly Shopping Center.

Councilwoman Marikay Abuzuaiter said, "We're still getting e-mails about I support Trader Joe's rezoning. So it didn't even get that far. And I understand their concern and they do want a Trader Joe's. I know people who drive to Winston to go to a Trader Joe's now. I understand that, but you also have to listen to the community."

Abuzuaiter supports the idea of a Trader Joe's somewhere else in the city. She just wishes that was discussed.

"You know let's think outside the box a little bit. Maybe if you put it in a different area. Maybe everyone will flock to that area also. They've got everything you want at Friendly Shopping Center. Let's, you know, spread it around and put it in other parts of the city to help raise that part of the city up."

Meanwhile, the Triad welcomed the first Trader Joe's to Winston-Salem in the Thruway Shopping Center. That opened in October.
