  • Winston-Salem, NC -- Investigators say a search for a suspect in a kidnapping and sexual assault has ended in an arrest.

Mount Airy police announced late Wednesday evening they'd arrested 26-year-old Robert Jeremy Haynes and charged him with first degree kidnapping, first degree rape and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Haynes was placed in the Surry County Detention Center. Haynes is a registered sex offender.

Winston-Salem police officers say a woman reported she was kidnapped from the parking lot of the Walmart at 320 Hanes Mill Road just before 11 on Monday night. Officers say a man snuck into her unlocked car as she returned her shopping car, surprised her and then made her drive to Mount Airy before sexually assaulting her.

WSPD first alerted the public to the report Tuesday afternoon. Mount Airy's police department took the lead on the investigation because that's where the sexual assault happened.

There are more than two dozen security cameras watching the Walmart parking lot -- and even more inside. Walmart says it turned over surveillance video to authorities. Mount Airy officers confirmed they looking over that video, and that they had all their investigators out Wednesday afternoon trying to find this suspect.
