Mount Airy, NC-- Tourism is up in Andy Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy since the actor died last month.
About 10,400 people visited the Andy Griffith Museum in July, almost twice the 5,300 who visited in July a year ago. Griffith died at the age of 86 of a heart attack July 3 at home in Manteo.
Griffith played Sheriff Andy Taylor in "The Andy Griffith Show", which aired from 1960 to 1968.
No one knows how many visitors to expect when the 23rd annual "Mayberry Days" is held Sept. 27-30. Typically, about 25,000 attend the event sponsored by the Surry Arts Council.
Tourism is the second-largest industry in Surry County, behind agriculture.
The council's executive director, Tanya Jones, says people visit Mount Airy because they want to walk where Griffith walked.
