Elon, NC -- Western Alamance High School celebrated its 50th Homecoming Friday night.
The announcement of the queen had everyone cheering.
Abbey Martin was crowned the school's 50th Homecoming queen. Abbey has Down syndrome and is in the multi-handicapped class at Western Alamance.
She turned 18 Thursday, so getting crowned was a special birthday present.
She has represented her class each year on the Homecoming court, and finally got to wear the crown this year.
"To know that these students think enough of these kids with special needs to treat them exactly the same as they treat everybody else, our school is just awesome. Our school is absolutely awesome," said Michelle Hancock, Abbey's mom.
Hancock said Abbey is a miracle. She's gone through open heart surgeries and a heart transplant.
"Her life has been so unbelievably hard and she smiles through every bit of it," said Hancock.
