CLEARWATER, Fla. (WTSP) -- A man arrested in connection with a home burglary in Safety Harbor underwent surgery to remove two necklaces police discovered he ingested after they showed up in an X-ray during booking.
Clearwater police officers arrested Joseph Ramos on Dec. 11 after learning the vehicle he was driving had been stolen during a burglary at a Safety Harbor home the day before.
When Ramos was going through the booking process, he was asked to step on the SecurPass Scanner, a whole body X-ray scanner recently installed in the jail. Deputies noticed a large dark mass near his stomach area. Further investigation revealed the object was necklaces he had swallowed before going to the jail.
He was then taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the necklaces from his stomach. Once they were removed, the burglary victim confirmed to detectives they were in fact hers.
Ramos, 20, has been charged with one count burglary and one count tampering with evidence.
