MURPHYSBORO, Ill. --Police in southern Illinois' Murphysboro say a man who allegedly pummeled a woman with a hammer in his home died after blowing up the residence as police converged.

Authorities say 54-year-old Thomas Allan Miller died at a hospital shortly after two explosions early Friday in his home.

The woman who Miller allegedly assaulted on the head with a hammer after he asked her to come to his home to assist him was taken to a St. Louis hospital. Her medical status wasn't clear Friday.

Police say that as officers responded to Miller's home to investigate the reported battery, Miller told a 911 dispatcher he planned to blow up his home and already had filled it with natural gas.

Authorities say Miller then ignited his living room, causing explosions.
