Nearly 30 hours before the Best Buy in St. Matthews is to open its doors with its door-busting discounts, two eager shoppers were in line and five tents were erected by those looking to be among the first to get in.

Carmen Thompson, 37, of South Louisville, said the wait would be worth it for her family of seven children, ages 2 to 19.

"We have always been here for Black Friday," Thompson said of her wait for Best Buy's 6 p.m. opening on Thanksgiving Day. "This is our family tradition. My family would not have the same Christmas if I didn't do this."

Thompson's tent was fifth in line. A middle-aged woman exited the first tent in line, but declined to comment.

This is the first year Best Buy has provided a portable toilet for shoppers, said George Watson, a Best Buy manager.

"We don't really police the line outside," Watson said of the mostly empty tents rustling in 25-degree weather. "I think it's too cold to draw many people waiting today."

Deals offered by Best Buy Thursday include an iPad2 16 GB with Wi-Fi for $299, a $100 discount, and a 39-inch LED HDTV television for $169.99.

This time last year, the line was wrapped around Best Buy, Carmen Thompson said from her tent, one of five pitched outside the store in 25-degree skies spitting snow midday Wednesday.

"This is the first year there hasn't been huge crowd. Usually, there is a kerosene heater and the guy didn't show up this year, probably because it's too cold."
