HILLVIEW, Ky. - A man attempting to break into a home Monday about 15 miles south of Louisville, Ky., shot a woman with her own gun after she confronted him at her back door, a Bullitt County Sheriff's detective said.
The incident happened at about 4 a.m. ET when the woman got up to let her dogs out in this city of less than 10,000 residents along Interstate 65, Detective Scotty McGaha said.
The woman told investigators she heard a noise and grabbed her 9mm handgun. When she opened her back door, she was face to face with the suspect, police said.
The man - described as about 35 years old, white with no facial hair and wearing a red baseball cap - was able to take the gun away from the woman and shot her once in the shoulder, McGaha said.
The woman's husband and daughter, who were asleep in the house at the time, woke up and rushed to her aid, but by the time they got to the door the assailant had fled, the detective said. The woman was taken to University of Louisville Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
