WEST SUSSEX, UK -- The southern English county of West Sussex launched a bid to set a new Guinness world record for the most people dressed as vampires together in one place on Saturday.
The current record is held by King's Dominion, an amusement park in Virginia. In September 2011, 1039 vampires gathered at the park to set the record.
America is famous for embracing Halloween but in recent years events across the globe now attract large numbers of gruesomely dressed participants.
But, as Halloween celebrations approach, the Brits were hoping to beat the Americans at their own game and get in early to set a new Vampire world record themselves.
The bid for the 'most vampires together in one place' attempt took place at Tulleys Farm, the United Kingdom's biggest Halloween themed attraction.
Appropriately, the event started at twilight. As with most records strict rules apply to make a qualifying appearance for the record attempt.
"For the rules, males have to have a black cape, black trousers, a white shirt, a waistcoat, a neck frill or neck tie, black shoes and vampire teeth. And for the females you have to have a black and red colored dress, dark eye makeup, red lips, vampire teeth and black shoes," an official explained.
Tulleys Farm is in a rural area and not within walking distance of any major towns or indeed villages, so anyone attending had to make an effort to arrive by bus or car.
The gathering attracted a mixture of participants, some who were clearly Vampire enthusiasts and movie fans, while others just wanted to be part of a world record attempt.
Only those meeting the strict criteria laid down by the Guinness World Records were counted and this eliminated many of the visitors who attended the event, who had simply worn the wrong color shoes or shirt.
As dusk descended and the light faded the Vampires streamed into an area eagerly awaiting the results and verification of the record attempt.
Despite the abundant enthusiasm of the participants, it transpired that the current holders in the US had nothing to fear from this particular UK challenge.
The count verified that just over 500 vampires had met their criteria on the night, so the challenge had failed.
But it was not completely in vain, the event set a new UK record for the biggest gathering of vampires.
