MONROE, N.C. (AP) --Authorities say a camera found in a tree outside an early voting precinct in Union County was placed there by a candidate afraid his campaign sign might be stolen.

The Enquirer-Journal of Monroe reports that volunteers with two other campaigns found the camera attached to a tree Friday while early voting took place at the Monroe branch of the county library.

Monroe City Council candidate Lance Dunn says he put the camera in the tree about a week ago to record evidence if anyone tried to steal one of his campaign signs.

He says he didn't ask the library for permission because he installed the camera after hours. Monroe Police took the camera and Dunn says detectives told him it could be several days before he gets it back.
